Yoda was a highly advanced puppet designed by legendary artist Stuart Freeborn and performed by Frank Oz, who also voiced him. The Dagobah swamp set was built several feet off the ground so Oz and other puppeteers could operate Yoda from below. Director Irvin Kershner was so impressed with Oz’s performance that he pushed for him to receive acting award consideration.
